In 1956 he began his film career when he starred in his father's film "Gunmen from Hell" at the age of eight. In 1958, Lawford made his Broadway debut in the musical "The Girls Ain't What They Used to Be." After leaving high school, Lawford enrolled at Georgetown University, where he played football for the Georgetown Hoyas football team and graduated with a degree in English in 1961. He then went on to play football for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL).
In 1966, the seventeen-year-old Lawford was signed by the Boston Patriots of the American Football League (AFL). He spent two years with the team before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys after a dispute over contract renegotiations. The following year, Lawford left professional football to return to acting.
While starring in several films and television shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he also continued acting on Broadway and in various television roles into his mid-thirties.
